Río Muchacho

The organic farm and ecological center Río Muchacho, located in the valley of the same name on Ecuador’s coast—40 minutes north of the Ecological City of Bahía de Caráquez and 15 minutes from Canoa beach—has become a true sanctuary of sustainability and experiential learning. Spread across 10 hectares, this space offers a peaceful and authentic environment, far from conventional tourist circuits.

With nearly 30 years of experience, Río Muchacho has gained international recognition as a positive development project due to the strong impact it has had on its local surroundings. The farm is deeply connected to the community and is a benchmark in permaculture and sustainable agriculture, offering a wide range of courses and training programs for different types of participants.

This oasis of sustainability is grounded in the principles of agroecology and permaculture. Its 10 hectares include edible forests, gardens, pastures, agroforestry areas, alternative energy models, and spaces dedicated to animal husbandry. Among its achievements and recognitions are being featured on National Geographic Travel’s list of the 8 favorite places to stay in Ecuador, as well as being highlighted by TV5 Ocean Pacific Canada as one of the 13 most eco-friendly destinations in the world.

One of the farm’s most emblematic projects has been the Río Muchacho Environmental School, the first Community Environmental School in Ecuador. For 23 years, it provided hands-on environmental education to generations of children from the community, offering them new perspectives and skills for the future. Since 2015, its educational approach has adapted to changing needs, transforming into an extracurricular center that leverages local potential and community-based courses, free from the administrative constraints of the Ministry of Education.
