Manatee
On the Manatee Amazon cruise, you’ll be guided by experienced local naturalists who will provide a clear and engaging introduction to the Ecuadorian Amazon. This region is incredibly rich in wildlife, home to over 200 butterfly species, 596 types of birds, 150 amphibians, 121 reptiles, and about 200 mammals — with new species still being discovered regularly.
Located at the foothills of the Andes, the rainforest has a fascinating geological history. Millions of years ago, the Amazon River flowed westward into the Pacific Ocean. However, the rise of the Andes around 20 million years ago blocked its path, creating freshwater lakes and eventually reversing the river’s flow toward the Atlantic, which it reached 10 million years later. Since then, the area has flourished with vibrant tropical ecosystems.
Join us and experience the wonders of the Amazon on this unforgettable cruise.
DAY 1: QUITO – COCA – NAPO RIVER
Arrival and First Impressions of the Amazon Our journey begins in Quito, Ecuador’s vibrant capital. From there, a short 30-minute flight takes us to the Amazonian city of Coca, where we transfer to the river dock and board a motorized canoe. As we travel 90 minutes downstream, the lush scenery of the Amazon unfolds around us, setting the tone for the adventure ahead.
Upon arrival at the Manatee Amazon Explorer, guests are greeted with a warm welcome aboard. Expert local naturalist guides join us to offer a brief yet insightful introduction to the Ecuadorian Amazon, its ecosystems, and its cultural significance.
Guests are then invited to explore the ship and take in the breathtaking rainforest views as we cruise along the Napo River. After a delicious dinner, we venture into the forest for a nighttime walk—an unforgettable experience filled with the sounds of the jungle and encounters with its nocturnal wildlife.
DAY 2: HOME OF THE LEGENDARY PINK RIVER DOLPHIN AND THE SECOYA COMMUNITY
Wildlife Encounters and Cultural Connections In the morning, we navigate the lower stretches of the Napo River, a prime location for birdwatching. Here, guests may spot majestic eagles, vibrant oropendolas, and the iconic woodpeckers that echo through the forest canopy.
In the afternoon, we journey into Yasuni National Park—one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth and a sanctuary for the elusive pink river dolphin. This visit offers a unique opportunity to engage with our pink dolphin conservation initiative, developed in collaboration with the Martinica community in the Cocaya area. Together, we help protect a safe habitat where these remarkable creatures can thrive, free from the threat of hunting.
Nearby, the Secoyas—an ancestral minority group—welcome us into their traditions by demonstrating how to prepare cassava bread, a staple of their culture and daily life.
DAY 3: KICHWA FAMILY AND LIFE ONBOARD
Immersive Culture and Amazonian Indulgence We begin the day with a visit to a traditional Kichwa family living along the banks of the Napo River. This intimate encounter offers a chance to learn firsthand about their customs, daily life, and deep connection to the rainforest.
Afterward, we return to the Manatee to join our expert chef for a hands-on cooking class featuring classic Ecuadorian dishes. Guests are also welcome to try their hand at traditional handicrafts, unwind in the open-air hot tub with sweeping views of the jungle, sip cocktails at the Bar and Lounge, or gaze at the stars from the Observation Deck.
DAY 4: FOREST ADVENTURE AND CANOPY OBSERVATION TOWER
Morning Among the Treetops We begin the day by climbing an observation tower nestled within the branches of a towering, ancient kapok tree. From its summit, guests are treated to a breathtaking 360° view over the forest canopy—an awe-inspiring vantage point that reveals the vastness and mystery of the Amazon rainforest.
Afternoon in the Heart of the Jungle Later, we venture into the untouched primary forest to discover the diverse plant and animal life that thrives in this unique ecosystem. Among the remarkable species we may encounter is the hoatzin, a peculiar and prehistoric-looking bird affectionately nicknamed the “stinkbird” for its distinctive odor.
DAY 5: RETURN
Farewell to the Amazon As our journey comes to an end, we make our way back to Puerto Providencia, taking in the final sights and sounds of the rainforest. There, we disembark from the Manatee Amazon Explorer and board our motorized canoe for the return ride to the city of Coca—carrying with us unforgettable memories of the Amazon’s beauty and wonder.
